Reiki comes from the pronunciation of two Japanese ideograms: Rei which means Universal Energy and Ki the individual vital energy.
The term was coined by Dr. Mikao Usui around the early 1900s, to indicate an ancient art of natural healing, which he rediscovered, based on the practice of energy rebalancing techniques and inner discipline.
By following the teachings handed down by Usui - which are learned by participating in seminars held by qualified Reiki Masters - each person, animated by the sincere desire to be a receptive channel, can connect to the Universal source and, through simple contact or the laying on of hands, can transmit vital energy to themselves or to anyone who wishes to receive a rebalancing treatment.....
Let's move on to what a REIKI MASTER is:
The term Reiki Master is the source of the greatest confusion for new, or potential, Reiki students
Ask a number of Reiki practitioners the question: "What is a Reiki Master?" and probably the most common response you'll get will be something like this: "Someone who has received an attunement to the master level of Reiki"
However, Takata-Sensei said that for a person to be considered a Reiki Master, it is not enough that they have received the attunement to the Master level and know how to pass the attunements to the other three levels; must have, at least, taught one class and have already activated at least one student.
With reference to Reiki, the Japanese term: sensei which is translated - very loosely - as "master", does not refer to one who has a thorough knowledge of the art of Reiki (not even one who has achieved some form of higher level in that subject, although many of us have thought so!)
The word sensei is, in fact, a term of respect, meaning, first and foremost, "teacher" and refers to someone who is part of a Teacher - Student (Mentor - Student) relationship. Translate: sensei as 'master' is, to put it simply, like referring to an "elementary school teacher" as "professor". And just as in the case of the professor, ideally a Reiki master is someone who (having received the relevant attunements) possesses a good knowledge of the topics, has a strong desire to help his students develop their potential, has respect for his students, (just as he knows how to deserve the respect of his students) and also has the ability to inspire his students and get the best out of them.....
